Congratulations you’re officially a commissioned notary public.

You completed the application, met your state’s requirements, purchased your supplies, and finally received your commission.

But now comes the question many new notaries aren’t prepared for:

What do I actually do next?

Getting commissioned gives you permission to perform notarial acts.

It does not automatically give you clients, appointments, income, or a business.

If your goal is to turn your commission into a profitable mobile notary business, the real work begins now.

The good news?

You don’t need to figure everything out at once.

You need a clear plan for turning your new commission into a professional business that people can actually find, trust, and hire.

1. Stop Thinking Like “Just a Notary”

One of the biggest shifts you can make is to stop thinking of yourself as someone who simply has a notary commission.

Start thinking like a business owner who provides notary services.

There’s a difference.

A commissioned notary waits for someone to ask:

“Do you know a notary?”

A notary business owner works to make sure that when someone searches “mobile notary near me,” their business has a chance of being found.

That means thinking about:

Your business name
Your service area
Your pricing
Your ideal clients
Your marketing
Your online presence
Your customer experience
Your income goals

Your commission is the credential.

The business you build around it is what creates the opportunity.

2. Decide Which Notary Services You’ll Offer

You don’t have to offer every possible service immediately.

Start with the services you are legally permitted and properly prepared to perform in your state.

Depending on your location and qualifications, your services might include general mobile notary work for documents such as affidavits, acknowledgments, jurats, powers of attorney, and other documents requiring notarization.

As your experience grows, you may decide to explore additional opportunities.

Loan Signing Services

Work with signing services, title companies, and other organizations that need trained signing agents.

Apostille Services

Help clients navigate the process of authenticating documents for international use, subject to your state’s rules and the scope of services you may legally provide.

Remote Online Notarization (RON)

If authorized in your state, remote notarization may allow you to serve clients electronically.

The goal isn’t to chase every opportunity at once.

Master your basic service first, then expand strategically.

3. Choose a Service Area

One mistake new mobile notaries make is trying to serve an area that’s simply too large.

Remember:

Every mile costs you money.

Gas, vehicle maintenance, drive time, parking, and tolls can quickly turn what looks like a profitable appointment into one that barely pays.

Instead, create a primary service radius.

For example:

Primary Area: 0–10 miles

Extended Area: 11–20 miles

Special Appointments: 20+ miles

Your exact structure will depend on your market and your state’s laws regarding notarial and travel fees.

Knowing your service area also makes your marketing easier.

You can target specific cities, neighborhoods, businesses, and organizations instead of trying to market everywhere.

4. Create a Professional Business Presence

Imagine someone hears about your business today.

What happens when they search for you online?

Can they immediately figure out:

Who are you?

What services do you provide?

Where do you provide them?

How can they contact you?

How can they schedule an appointment?

Your online presence doesn’t need to be complicated, but it should look professional.

Consider building the basics:

A professional business name
Business email address
Dedicated business phone number
Simple website
Google Business Profile, if eligible
Professional social media profiles
Business cards
Clear service descriptions

You don’t need a $5,000 website.

A clean website explaining what you do, where you work, and how someone can contact you can be far more useful than an expensive site that confuses visitors.

Make it easy for a potential client to answer one question:

“Can this person help me?”

5. Know What You’re Going to Charge

Don’t wait until someone calls to figure out your pricing.

That creates unnecessary pressure and can lead to inconsistent quotes.

Before taking appointments, understand your state’s maximum notarial fees and any rules that apply to separate travel, convenience, or other charges.

Then determine what makes financial sense for your business.

Your pricing may need to account for:

Notarial fees
Travel distance
Drive time
Parking
Tolls
After-hours appointments
Wait time
Printing or other permitted services

Always clearly distinguish any travel or service fees from the notarial fee itself where required.

And remember:

Revenue isn’t the same thing as profit.

A $40 appointment doesn’t put $40 in your pocket if you spent an hour driving and used $10 in fuel and other expenses to complete it.

Know your numbers before you start accepting every appointment that comes your way.

6. Prepare Before Your First Client Calls

Your first appointment shouldn’t be the first time you think through your process.

Create a simple workflow before the phone rings.

When someone calls, you should know what information you need to collect.

For example:

What type of document needs notarization?

How many signers are involved?

Does the signer have acceptable identification?

Where is the appointment located?

What time is the appointment?

How many notarizations may be required?

Are there witnesses involved?

You should also understand what you can and cannot tell a client.

As a notary, staying within the boundaries of your authority is critical.

Unless you are separately qualified to do so, you should not provide legal advice or choose a notarial act for a signer.

A professional intake process helps you gather the information you need while protecting both you and the client.

7. Don’t Wait for Clients to Find You

This is where many new notaries get stuck.

They get commissioned.

They buy their stamp.

They create a business card.

Then...

They wait.

And wait.

And wait.

Your first clients usually aren’t going to magically appear.

You need to put your business in front of people who may need your services.

Start locally.

Potential referral sources can include:

Attorneys and law offices
Assisted-living facilities
Hospitals and healthcare facilities
Real estate professionals
Title and escrow professionals
Small businesses
Senior communities
Local organizations

You can also create useful online content answering questions potential customers are already searching for.

Instead of constantly posting:

“I’m a notary. Hire me!”

Create content such as:

“What ID Do You Need for a Notary Appointment?”

“Can a Mobile Notary Come to a Hospital?”

“What Should You Bring to a Notary Appointment?”

Helpful information builds credibility while making potential clients aware that your service exists.

8. Ask Every Happy Client for a Review

Your first five reviews can be more valuable than hundreds of social media followers.

Why?

Because people looking for a notary often need one right now.

When they’re comparing two nearby businesses, strong reviews can help establish trust.

After successfully completing an appointment, make requesting a review part of your normal follow-up process.

Keep it simple:

"Thank you for choosing my business today. If you were happy with the service, I’d appreciate it if you would leave a quick review."

Over time, those reviews become part of your business’s reputation.

One satisfied customer may also become a repeat client or refer someone else to you.

9. Track What’s Actually Making You Money

Don’t run your business based purely on how busy you feel.

Track your numbers.

At minimum, record:

Number of inquiries
Number of completed appointments
Revenue
Mileage
Business expenses
Referral source
Repeat customers
Most profitable services

Pay particular attention to where clients found you.

If ten clients came through Google and zero came through Instagram, that’s useful information.

If attorneys are becoming repeat clients while another marketing channel generates nothing, that’s useful information too.

The goal isn’t to market everywhere.

The goal is to discover what works and do more of it.

10. Build One Step at a Time

You don’t need to have the perfect logo, website, pricing structure, marketing strategy, and client system figured out during your first week.

Focus on progress.

Your first goal might be getting your business foundation established.

Then getting your first client.

Then your first five reviews.

Then creating repeatable marketing.

Then developing referral partnerships.

Then expanding into additional services.

A successful notary business isn’t usually built from one big decision.

It’s built from dozens of small actions repeated consistently.

Your Commission Was Step One. Now Build the Business.

Receiving your notary commission is exciting but a commission alone doesn’t create a business.

You still need to answer questions like:

How do I set everything up?

How do I price my services?

What do I say when my first client calls?

How do I prepare for an appointment?

Where do I actually find clients?

That’s exactly why I created The Notary Blueprint: How to Start, Build & Scale Your Notary Business with Confidence.

Instead of trying to piece everything together from random videos, posts, and searches, the Notary Blueprint gives new notaries a practical roadmap for moving from:

“I got my commission.”

to...

“I’m building a real notary business.”

Inside, you’ll learn how to establish your business, prepare for clients, market your services, create better systems, and explore ways to grow beyond basic notarizations.

You’ll also get practical resources designed to help you take action instead of simply reading about what you should be doing.
